Our Watsonia Collection
Our Watsonia fields are located in the Langkloof and Zwartenbosch near Humansdorp.
All of the varieties of Watsonia grown are indigenous to the Southern and western Cape regions. They are propagated vegetatively, in other words new bulbs develop from one parent plant. This means that all of the spring bulbs of each variety will be genetically the same in terms of colour and form. Several of the varieties were produced from seed which can result in new colours and due to the hybridization of some of the W. knysnana, W. pillansii and W. borbonica parent plants.
Watsonias grow best in areas with a warm temperate climate. They prefer acid, well drained, sandy soils enriched with compost and also respond to applications of N:P:K fertilizers. Watsonias will require watering should they be planted outside of their natural environment. For example, Spring flowering plants indigenous to the winter rainfall region and planted on the Highveld will require watering during winter months.
